Skin is an organ, and it should comes as no surprise that foods that are heart healthy also benefit the skin. Foods rich in Vitamin A, such as beef liver, carrots, sweet potatoes, greens such as spinach, collards and kale, and dairy foods are tremendous for glowing, healthy skin. Excessive intake will result in Vitamin A toxicity, and potentially death. While Vitamin A is a necessary component for bodily functions, there can definitely be too much of a good thing. Cells of the skin have both defensive and regenerative properties. Skin cells are subject to harsh environments such as heat, tearing, scraping, UV exposure and pollution.

The outer membrane, and first line of defense, for skin cells is composed of phosphorus and fat cells. Hydration is important in flushing toxins from the body. The skin is the first line of defense from disease and pollution, and adequate water levels assist the skin in this task.

The are many foods to avoid if healthy, beautiful skin is the goal. Foods rich in hydrogenated oils, sugar and saturated fats help create a breeding ground of bacteria. Excessive caffeine intake  contributes to dehydration, and can leave behind dry skin. Colas and other soft drinks are a double whammy because of their high sugar and caffeine content.

It’s no coincidence that foods that a poor for the waistline are also not a part of a healthy skin diet.
